Frederick Douglass

I am reading the wonderful biography of the fame civil rights leader, author, activist, and intellectual Frederick Douglass by David Blight. The story is wonderful and amazing. Shortly after leaving slavery Douglass was one of the leading intellectuals in the world.

Some of his views would not be popular today. He strongly pushed for black people to work hard and make their own way in the world and not rely on government support. He was very critical of Native Americans and biased toward Catholics. It just shows you that Douglass like everyone was far from perfect and needed to be viewed by the standards of his time. He was a great and fearless man nonetheless. Written by Paul Dribin
